Quick N' Easy Sugar Cookies!

Christmas is coming, and in our household that usually means A LOT of baking is going on throughout the month of December.

Whether it’s baking cookies for teachers, friends or neighbours- with our family, kids have always been welcome in the kitchen to help!

Memories being in the kitchen side by side with our Grammy (arguably the best cook and baker to ever walk on this earth) fill my and my cousins childhood. I remember the feeling of contribution and pride when helping create the treats that were gobbled up even quicker than they were made!

So in tribute to all of you mommas who want to include your littles in baking throughout their childhood, I am sharing my FAVOURITE Sugar Cookie recipe!! Not only are they delicious, but I love them for 2 more reasons…

1) It is super easy to involve your kiddos & is a recipe that can be accomplished within their attention span! (Or one you can accomplish while your newborn sleeps!!)

2) No fancy ingredients! Basic stuff that is usually found in most cupboards!

So, here we go!

SPRINKLED SUGAR COOKIES!

Prep Time: 20 mins

  • Cook Time: 10 mins

  • Total Time: 30 mins

  • Yield: 20

ingredients

  • 1 cup Sugar

  • 1 Large Egg (room temperature)

  • 1 cup Unsalted Butter (softened to room temperature)

  • 1/2 tablespoon Pure Vanilla Extract

  • 2 1/4 cup All Purpose Flour

  • 1/2 teaspoon Baking Powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon Baking Soda

  • Additional sugar or sprinkles for rolling*

instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line cookie sheet with parchment paper or use non-stick pan. Set aside.

  2. In a small bowl, combine flour, baking powder and baking soda. Stir dry ingredients together. Set aside.

  3. In a large mixing bowl cream butter and sugar together using a hand held mixer or stand mixer on medium speed. Mix for 2-3 minutes so butter is light and fluffy. Add in egg and vanilla. Continue mixing until egg and the vanilla extract is combined. Slowly add in dry ingredients and turn the mixer speed to low. Continue mixing on low speed until dry ingredients are fully incorporated and cookie dough is formed.

  4. Pour additional sugar or sprinkles (or both) onto a small plate for rolling. Scoop 1.5 tablespoon sized dough balls and roll each one in between your palms to make a circular shape. Roll individual dough balls in sugar/ sprinkles until completely covered. Place dough balls on cookie sheet. If you are looking for a thicker cookie, form the dough into a long dough ball and have it stand up straight (try to imagine a snowman). If you prefer a flatter cookie, Using the bottom of a small drinking glass, light press on top of each cookie to slightly flatten it. Do not completely flatten, cookies should still be thick. Bake for 10 minutes.

  5. Remove cookies from oven and all to cool for about 15 minutes so the cookies have time to firm up slightly. Serve immediately.
